Introducing the ION Championship Series & the 1st Stage – Monotype Madness 2018

ICSlogo

With 2018 right around the corner, it’s time to announce the next big ION Game Corner Pokémon event, the ION Championship Series! The ICS is a series of tournaments that will take place during 2018. The first 3 tournaments will serve as a qualifying ground for the final tournament of the year, the ION Cup Championship. Here is how the ICS will break down.

The schedule of ICS tournaments will be as follows:

January – Monotype Madness
April – Standard rule tournament (to be named)
July – Theme tournament taken from a rotating list of themes
October – ION Cup Championship

The winners of the first 3 tournaments will automatically qualify for the ION Cup Championship. The remaining 5 spots will be made of the players from the remaining player pool who have the most ICS points. Points will be awarded based on finishing place of the tournaments. First place finishers will also receive points to determine seeding for the ION Cup Championship.

Points awarded:
1st – 50
2nd – 40
3rd – 30
4th – 20
5th-8th – 10

This brings us to the first ICS tournament of 2018…

MMlogo2018

As the name implies, this is a monotype tournament. Here is how it will work.

Tournament Format

The tournament will be conducted in two stages. The first stage will be round robin. Players will be split into groups at random. Each player will battle every other player in the group once. At the end of the group stage, the top 8 players (made up of group winners and the best of the rest of the pool) will advance the next stage. The second stage will be a single elimination tournament. Seeding for this stage will be determine by standings in group play.

Players will be allowed to play their group stage battles in any order they choose. Each player will be required to play at least 1 group stage battle per week. Players are more than welcome to play their group stage battles as fast as they can. The faster all of the group stage battles are finished, the sooner we advance to the top 8 stage.

Players in the top 8 will receive ICS points based on their finishing place.

Battle Procedures

All battles will be played on Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

All Pokémon on a player’s team must share a common type. You must stick to this type for the duration of the tournament. You may, however, alter your team from battle to battle, as long as the type chosen is adhered to.

Pokémon that change type on Mega evolution will be considered the typing of the Mega if you are using that Pokémon’s Mega Stone. For example, if your chosen type is Dragon, you may use Sceptile as long as you are using its Mega Stone. Conversely, if your chosen type is Flying, you may not use Charizard if you are using Charizardite X.

Damaging Z-Move usage is restricted to the player’s chosen type. For example, a player using the Normal type may only use the damaging Z-Moves Breakneck Blitz or Pulverizing Pancake. There is no type restriction on Status Z-Moves.

All battles will follow the general ION battle rules.

All battles will be 6 vs. 6, Single battles.

Battles will be conducted under Normal rules.

No 2 Pokémon on a player’s team may hold the same item.

The moves Double Team and Minimize are banned.

The ability Moody is banned.

The items Bright Powder and Lax Incense are banned.

A player is not allowed to put more than one of the opponent’s Pokémon to sleep concurrently with a move that induces the sleep status.

Pokémon deemed to be illegal (moveset or stats) will result in the forfeiture of the battle and possible removal from the tournament.

If both player’s final Pokémon faint on the final turn, or if the time limit for the battle expires, the winner determined by the game shall be the winner.

The following Pokémon may not be used by players:
Mewtwo
Lugia
Ho-oh

Prize

The winner of the tournament will receive a gift card in the gaming medium of their choosing. This can be through a company’s system (i.e. Nintendo eShop) or a retailer (Amazon, Best Buy, etc.). As long as it can be digitally distributed, it’s fair game. The value of the gift card will depend on the players. The prize pool will open at $10. Other players may, if they choose, donate to the prize pool for the tournament.

If you would like to contribute: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?token=Yx … ocale.x=US

Just add that it is for the Monotype Madness prize pool in the special instructions section. All contributions will be kept anonymous.

Tournament begins: January 1
Deadline to register: December 31
